Imagine stepping off a crowded Northern line tube, tense and exhausted, into a warm, softly lit Crouch End studio where the air smells of fresh and everyone appears relaxed. Many students call this their turning point.

If you’ve been wondering if hot yoga suits you, this guide covers what to wear and how your body might feel, helping you feel prepared for your first class instead of nervous.

What Is Hot Yoga, Exactly?

Hot yoga is practised in a heated room, typically between 35°C and 40°C, with moderate humidity. The heat is intentional, it encourages muscles to open more deeply, supports circulation, and helps you move further into postures than you might in a cooler space.

It’s worth knowing that hot yoga isn’t one fixed style. You might encounter:

  • Bikram yoga: a set sequence of 26 postures in a very specific format
  • Hot Vinyasa: flowing, music-led sequences in a heated room
  • Inferno Hot Pilates: a high-energy Pilates-yoga hybrid
  • Yin or Restorative Hot Yoga: slower, longer-held poses with gentle warmth

At our London studios, including Crouch End, we offer heated classes for diverse preferences and fitness levels. Whether you prefer the meditative stillness of Yin or the energising flow of Vinyasa, there’s a suitable class.

Your First Hot Yoga Class: What to Expect

Before You Arrive

Hydration starts early, so drink water steadily throughout the day before your class, not just beforehand. Many new hot yoga students underestimate this.

Eat lightly if at all. Most practitioners find a two-to-three-hour gap between eating and class feels most comfortable.

What to wear to hot yoga is a question we hear all the time. Keep it simple:

  • Moisture-wicking, close-fitting fabric (shorts or leggings, a fitted vest or sports bra)
  • Avoid loose cotton, it holds sweat and becomes heavy
  • No shoes are needed; most hot yoga classes are practised barefoot
  • Bring a water bottle, a towel for your mat, and a small hand towel if you like

Arrive ten to fifteen minutes early for your first hot yoga class. This lets your body begin adjusting to the room temperature before movement begins a small step that makes a real difference.

In the Room

The heat hits you first. There’s no avoiding that. But most first-timers find that within five to ten minutes of gentle movement, the warmth starts to feel supportive rather than overwhelming.

Here are a few honest hot yoga tips to help you through:

  1. Breathe steadily: When the room feels intense, slow nasal breathing is your best tool.
  2. Rest in Child’s Pose whenever you need to: Genuinely, our teachers encourage this. Your first class is not a test.
  3. Keep your eyes soft: Rather than scanning the room, find a fixed point in front of you.
  4. Don’t compare: Every person in that room has their own practice.
  5. Listen to your body: If you feel dizzy or nauseous, step outside. This is completely normal in early classes.

The energy in a hot yoga class is hard to describe until you’ve felt it: the collective focus, the sound of breath, the way the room seems to move together.

What Happens to Your Body?

You will sweat significantly, which is normal, healthy, and part of the experience. Sweating in a warm environment helps regulate body temperature, and many students report feeling deeply refreshed afterward, though responses vary.

In a heated environment, the warmth can help muscles release more gradually, which many beginners find makes postures feel more accessible than expected.

Is Hot Yoga Right for You?

Hot yoga is welcoming to a wide range of bodies, backgrounds, and experience levels. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to have done yoga before. You simply need to be willing to show up.

That said, if you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant, or have heat sensitivity, it’s worth speaking to your GP before your first class. We always encourage new students to have a quick chat with one of our teachers before stepping in. It’s part of how we ensure every person feels supported.

Ready to Try Your First Class?

The best way to understand hot yoga is to experience it. Words only go so far. Our Crouch End studio team would love to welcome you, whether you’re stepping onto a mat for the very first time or returning to yoga after a long break.
